Enormous Poisonous Spider Denied Entry to New Zealand

Border staff at Auckland Airport found a huntsman spider — sometimes referred to as a crab spider due to its size and nightmarish appearance — inside a passenger’s luggage. The gargantuan poisonous spider is believed to have stowed away on a flight from Australia to New Zealand.

A representative from the Ministry for Primary Industries in New Zealand said that although the huntsman spider poses no serious risk to human life, their presence could potentially upset the balance of New Zealand’s ecosystem. There is no report at press time on whether or not the huntsman spider has been disposed of, up to and including being jettisoned into the cold vacuum of space.
