Eel-Smugglers Caught on Madrid Flight
The security team at Madrid’s Adolfo-Suárez airport discovered 48 live eels packed into a group of Chinese passengers’ luggage. An endangered species, the eels were intended to be transported from Spain back to China hidden within specially-refrigerated cases.
The eels were confiscated and brought to the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) before being re-housed in Madrid’s Zoo-Aquarium on Wednesday, where they now await special analysis by experts from Madrid’s Museum of Natural Sciences.
