EasyJet Cracks Down on Late Passengers

EasyJet has introduced a new policy at Gatwick Airport (LGW): Passengers attempting to get through security barriers within half an hour of take-off will not be allowed to board their flights, and may also be forced to pay £80 to switch to a different flight. Erstwhile late passengers with no checked baggage were permitted to pass through security checks and hurry to the terminal, but the new rule enforced by EasyJet will reject passengers’ boarding passes at security checkpoints if the flight is due to take off in 30 minutes or fewer. Passengers have been warned of this change in the small print of their boarding passes: “Gatwick security control gates are automatically being timed to close 30 minutes before departure.”

One comment to all three of the previous commenters: leave enough time to have a healthy safety margin. Don't expect other passengers to wait for your royal personages. All carriers have a latest checkin time. This is not new news. It should not be a matter of shock and horror that one of them is actually enforcing it, for the sake of other passengers and to keep down costs - don't forget that airlines are often fined by airports for missing takeoff slots.

another unnecessary stupid rule. Like closing the train doors in Euston 2 minutes before departure. Watching the plane/train which you cannot access standing in front of you only makes passengers angry and choosing another carrier next time.

Security should have nothing at all to do with boarding flights. How can they get away with this crap?

Having recently arrived at Stansted 20 minutes before scheduled departure of a Ryanair flight due to traffic, I do not agree with this. I made it through security and to the gate within 10 minutes, where boarding hadn't even started. With this new rule, i'd have been stopped at security when I could still have made it. For hand luggage passengers, the limit should be ~15 mins or something.
