Earn a 25% Bonus on Amex Point Conversions to Air France/KLM Miles

American Express Membership Rewards program is offering yet another bonus on point transfers to an airline partner, and this time that partner is Air France/KLM. Amex members who transfer their MR points to Flying Blue through June 15 will receive a 25-percent bonus.

Once you convert 1,000 Membership Rewards points to Flying Blue, you will receive 1,250 Air France/KLM miles. There’s no limit to the number of Amex points you can convert, but you have to transfer in increments of 1,000 points.

Flying Blue Program Changes Redemption Rates June 1

Keep in mind that the Flying Blue program is changing June 1, and redemption rates will be calculated based on the city pairs as well as travel dates and the overall demand. Right now, redemption rates are zone-based, so some awards will be negatively affected and others will be positively affected by the change.

For example, I live in Salt Lake City, and right now I can redeem 25,000 Flying Blue award miles for a one-way flight to Paris. Beginning June 1, the minimum redemption rate is going up to 29,000 miles per one way, and I will need to shell out 8,000 more miles for each round-trip flight. However, New York City residents’ redemption rates will drop to 22,000 miles for the same flights.

Should You Make a Point Transfer?

You might have noticed that every time I write a post about transfer bonuses, I do not recommend making a speculative transfer. Even with the changes looming over us next month, I stand by that recommendation.

Make sure to have a travel destination in mind and that availability is actually there before making a point transfer, even when a bonus is involved. What’s the point of having more miles in your account if you can’t use them? Most point transfers are irreversible, so you better be sure you can redeem your miles the way you want.
