The U.K. Air Proximity Board (UKAB) is investigating recent incidents involving drones that have been involved in four serious near-misses at U.K. airports. British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) is calling for stricter rules and registration so the devices can be traced and their users can be prosecuted. The concern is that the number of incidents could potentially increase in the near future due to drones being given as gifts over the holidays.
Of the recent occurrences, a drone came within 16 feet of a Boeing 737 aircraft at London Stansted Airport (STN), and a drone almost hit a Boeing 777’s wing at Heathrow (LHR) shortly after the passenger aircraft took off.
