Dreamliner Makes Emergency Landing in Ireland, Airline Denies Reports of Fire Onboard

A Dreamliner was forced to make emergency landing due to fire alarm, although Aeromexico denies the flight caught fire.

Approximately 193 Aeromexico customers’ travel plans were thrown off course Monday when a alarm in the cargo hold forced their Boeing 787-8 to make an emergency landing. Reuters reports the Dreamliner safety landed at Shannon Airport (SNN) in Ireland amid concerns of a fire onboard.

Aeromexico Flight 3 was reportedly en route from Mexico City (MEX) to Paris (CDG) when a cargo hold alert went off in the cockpit. Fearing that a fire may have broken out in the rear cargo hold, the pilots declared an emergency. According to a Twitter user aboard the flight, quoted by the Irish Mirror, passengers instructed to brace themselves for the emergency landing at SNN.

Although a SNN representative confirmed to The Independent that the flight landed safetly and emergency crews responded, they did not comment on the alleged fire. Boeing declined to comment on the incident when contacted by Reuters, directing all questions to Aeromexico.

Aeromexico told Reuters that the cargo hold alert triggered the emergency landing, later adding that there was no fire onboard.

Monday’s incident marks the second time in 12 months that a Dreamliner has been forced to divert due to alerts of a possible fire onboard. In September 2014, pilots of a LOT Polish Airlines 787-8 made an emergency landing after a cargo hold fire alarm went off mid-flight.

Boeing’s Dreamliner has a long history of fire troubles, with aviation authorities around the globe grounding the aircraft for several months in 2013 following a rash of battery fires.
