Do You Know What TSA Precheck Is? Then You’re in the Minority
TSA’s Precheck program has been around to frequent flyers since 2011 and was further expanded in 2013, but only 1 in 4 flyers have ever heard of such a thing, according to an Airfarewatchdog survey.
George Hobica, president of the Airfarewatchdog, says that the program doesn’t really advertise. “It’s a word-of-mouth product,” he says. “You go to the airport and see the TSA Precheck sign. Maybe it’s a well-kept secret. Maybe they don’t want everyone to have it.”
The survey also found that 21 percent of fliers don’t find the program necessary. However, a recent study from the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), found that pre-approved business travelers are much happier with their air travel than those who aren’t part of the program, reports Forbes. About two-thirds of those with Precheck reported being satisfied with the airport security process, compared to 47% of travelers without Precheck, according to the association.
In order to become a pre-approved flier, the TSA Precheck program requires an application — which can be done online or at an enrollment center — and a visit to an enrollment center to provide fingerprints, paperwork and payment, which is $85 and covers five years of membership.
I didn't know my Global Entry included Precheck until this year. For 18 months I used Global Entry and didn't take advantage...
Remember that CBP's Global Entry program includes TSA Precheck for only $15 more - i.e. $100 for 5 years. Absolutely worth it if you do just a few international trips over the 5 years.
I wish they make it a "pay only" option. So people that get it know what heck it is and dont slow things down taking off shoes, belts and laptops.
