Disruptions Force Spirit to Cancel 40 Percent of Schedule

best budget airline

A number of problems within Spirit Airlines forced the carrier to cancel nearly half of their schedule on Monday, August 2, 2021. Cities like Orlando were heavily affected, attributing for over 200 cancellations on the day.

The combination of weather issues and “operational challenges” forced Spirit Airlines to cancel over 300 flights and delay 213 more on Monday, August 2, 2021. Data from FlightAware.com shows the carrier cancelled 313 flights, with the majority of those coming out of Orlando International Airport (MCO).

Weather Issues Create Domino Effect, Leaving Spirit Scrambling to Catch Up

At Orlando alone, 227 flights – or roughly 73 percent of the total cancellations – were grounded at the airport. The issue began the day before, when storms rolling into the area forced several cancellations at MCO and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

In a statement issued to Orlando Fox affiliate WRBW-TV, the airline noted that the weather situation and “operational challenges” created the need for “proactive cancellations.” On Twitter, the carrier directed people to their website to check the status of their flight and contact the customer service call center for help.

The Air Line Pilots Association, which represents the carrier’s pilots, said a labor issue on their side was not to blame for the situation. Instead, the labor union said they were “working diligently with other employee groups” to resume flights as soon as possible.

Despite the best efforts, flyers were heavily affected by the cancellations and outages. Some flyers told reporters on the scene they were forced to wait over eight hours to speak with personnel at the airport and get rebooked on a future flight.

Issue Marks Second Major Flight Cancellation Event in Orlando in Past 30 Days

The cancellation marks the second major flight outage to affect the Central Florida airport in less than a month. Roughly a week prior, Frontier Airlines was forced to delay flights and luggage deliveries to MCO, with local authorities blaming a lack of airport workers.

Anyone looking to fly a cut-rate airline, remember that these things happen with these types of airlines. In this case, they can strand you for multiple days before a seat is available. If you are in a group, it could be even worse. This also exemplifies why you buy travel insurance to cover the costs of delays. In this case, they will be huge for multiple nights of hotels and meals. Lesson - it is always worth the extra money to fly mainline. If you shop, you can find mainline airfares similar to these cut-rate airlines (Spirit / Frontier). Learn your lessons by learning from others' experiences. Don't learn these lessons the hard way.
