Delta Miles Never Expire

Unlike many other airline loyalty programs, Delta SkyMiles has a special perk: The miles never expire. But that doesn’t mean you should sit there and rack them up without ever redeeming them. Here’s how to make the best out of every mile in your SkyMiles account.

Delta, as loyal travelers, we’d like to thank you for giving us miles without an expiration date. It’s a common trend with both airline miles and hotel points that if you don’t get at least one mile or point annually, you can kiss what you’ve accumulated goodbye. Delta says ‘no’ to that strategy, providing SkyMiles accounts with miles that never expire after you earn them.

Technically, miles can officially be deactivated, but that’s really only in case of fraud, death, violations of the law or the guidelines, and a lack of communication with the airline about your status. In short, don’t just sit there and think everything is alright with your miles. Make sure you’re logging in to your account regularly and that your email stays up-to-date.

To make extra sure your miles don’t get deactivated, try redeeming them – economy class domestic one-ways start as low as 5,000 miles, and if you redeem them as needed, you can be sure they don’t lose value like so many other loyalty programs do to their rewards. You can also use your miles to upgrade to those posh higher class seats you’ve always wanted to try.

There are credit card perks, too; when you have the Delta credit card, you earn miles on every purchase and you get to check bags for free. And if you have an American Express credit card that earns points, you can transfer those over to your SkyMiles account.

The article claims: "when you have the Delta credit card, you [...] get to check bags for free." Not quite true. It depends on WHICH Delta credit card you have. Amex recently introduced a no-fee Delta Blue credit card, and it doesn't have that benefit. There are actually three types of Delta credit cards (Blue, Gold, Platinum), and so it's misleading to just say :the Delta card" without specifying which one(s) you're talking about.
