Delta Flash Sale: U.S. to Australia for 48,000 SkyMiles
Australia is a bucket-list destination for many travelers, but unfortunately flights to the Land Down Under typically cost a pretty penny. Even mileage rates usually aren’t for the weak-hearted.
However, I’ve got great news for Delta SkyMiles collectors. Delta Air Lines is running a reduced-mileage sale from the 48 contiguous United States to Sydney. You should be able to find round-trip flights to Australia for just 48,000 SkyMiles in economy class, which is a steal. Generally, award flights to Australia start at about 80,000 SkyMiles, and you’re truly getting a great deal.
To take advantage of the reduced redemption rates, you must book your trip on Delta.com by Sept. 12 and travel between Sept. 13 and Dec. 5. Remember that summer months in the Southern Hemisphere are opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere, and you should find October and November quite pleasant in Australia.
Keep in mind that U.S. passport holders must have a tourist visa for travel to Australia, but it’s possible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) online for visits shorter than 90 days.
Salt Lake City to Sydney
My fellow Utahns can fly to Sydney with a stop in Los Angeles in each direction without redeeming a pile of miles. A round-trip flight in November will set you back just 48,000 miles +$116. Visit the iconic Sydney Opera House, catch some rays at Bondi beach or, if you’re brave enough, bungee jump from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Will you use SkyMiles toward a trip to Australia?
I booked a one way economy seat to Sydney on UA last week for 32,000, down from the usual 40,000. Delta's offer is only a bargain by Delta standards. They still want 465,000 Sky Pesos for one-way biz class, which is 90,000 on UA.
while the miles are good, bare in mind that this promo is for basic main cabin, and considering you'll fly about 24 hours, that may not be a good thing
Can we do this the other way around? ie from Australia to the US, return?
