Delta, Aeromexico Deal Approved by DOT
The Department of Transportation (DOT) gave tentative approval on Friday for Delta Air Lines to market and provide flights between the United States and Mexico in conjunction with Mexican carrier Aeromexico. The two airlines already had an agreement to carry approximately one out of every four passengers between Mexico and the U.S., and the DOT’s recent approval will permit the two to jointly carry more passengers than American Airlines or United Airlines.
The approval did not come without a price. Per USA Today, the DOT added a condition that requires “Delta and Aeromexico to surrender government permits for 24 pairs of landings and takeoffs” at Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and six pairs of slots at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). This provision is meant to prevent a monopoly from the airlines at these massively populated airports.
