De-Icer Sickens Alaska Air Crew

After being exposed to a powdery substance that is being identified as de-icing residue, two Alaska Airlines crew members fell ill Thursday night. According to Ann Zaninovich, airline spokeswoman, the affected crew were sitting in the front of the aircraft after landing in San Jose, CA, from Seattle, when they noticed the substance blowing from the plane’s vents.

Though the material is nontoxic, one of the attendants has been hospitalized and is in an unknown condition. The other has been treated and released, and fire officials are still looking into the situation.
