Costa Rican Volcanoes Close Airports

Over 20 ash-filled eruptions from the Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica have caused several airports to close temporarily as ash and volcanic emissions sweep across the country. Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), which is only about 35 kilometers away from Turrialba, was closed for the better part of a day due to dangerous conditions, that featured ash-covered runways and fragments of volcanic glass that could become lodged in aircraft equipment.
