Cobalt Air Collapses, Advises Passengers Not to Travel

Cypriot carrier Cobalt Air has revealed the sudden cessation of all of its operations. The announcement was made public on Wednesday, with the carrier asking those with tickets not to travel. The collapse has left the carrier’s passengers stranded, but the Cypriot government is offering assistance.

Cypriot airline Cobalt Air has announced that it has canceled all of its services and has advised any ticketed passengers not to go to any departure airport, The Guardian reports. In a statement on its website, the Larnaca-based carrier said that it had canceled all of its services as of Wednesday, October 17th at 11:50 p.m. local time.

It added that this sudden cessation of flights was “due to indefinite suspension of Cobalt’s operations.” The company also advised passengers seeking refunds to make contact with their credit card companies and added, “We sincerely apologize once again and would like to thank our very loyal customers for their support over the last two years of Cobalt operations.”

Cobalt officially commenced its operations back in June of 2016 and served a range of 23 destinations across the Mediterranean, Russia and Europe. The carrier’s main hub was Larnaca International Airport (LCA).

According to the Cyprus Mail, Cobalt had been unable to find long-term funds to support its onward operations. In a statement quoted by the outlet, the carrier said, “The company has been working relentlessly during the past months to secure the long-term financing of the airline.”

This collapse, Cobalt said, is “…an enormous disappointment after the incredible hard work and dedication put into building the airline. We would like to express our regret for any inconvenience caused by this sudden decision to all of our passengers.”

Cobalt’s demise leaves passengers stranded, but Vasiliki Anastasiadou, Cypriot transport minister, has said that support will be available for these travelers, with special telephone numbers currently being set up to offer assistance to those in need.

It is being reported that the Cypriot government will be covering the cost of a return ticket for those who need to return to their destination of origin.

“The priority for the ministry is to help the people who have been stranded,” Anastasiadou said.
