Cell Phone Company Wants Reagan National Renamed

CREDO, a San Francisco-based company, has launched an online petition to drop the “Reagan” from Reagan National Airport.

Outraged by a perceived hypocrisy in the Republican outcry over President Obama’s executive order renaming North America’s tallest mountain Mount Denali, a San Francisco-based cell phone firm CREDO has put forward its own modest proposal. The company started a petition to highlight what it views as a double standard, noting that politicians opposed to removing a former president’s name from an official designation should have no problem with restoring President Washington’s name to prominence in the rather wordy title of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

While Denali, the original Native American name for the landmark, replaced the moniker Mount McKinley that honored the 25th U.S. President William McKinley, CREDO argues those claiming respect for a Commander-in-Chief’s legacy should be just as upset that Reagan’s name supplanted George Washington’s legacy when the airport was renamed in 1998.

The petition to rename DCA points out that while Alaskans overwhelmingly supported renaming Denali out of respect for native culture, local residents and airport employees were fiercely opposed to renaming the airport in honor of the President who ordered the nation’s entire air traffic controller workforce fired in a labor dispute.

CREDO is no stranger to supporting progressive causes. CREDO Action is the company’s political action arm. The site has in the past taken stands against communications companies that work too closely with the National Security Agency, opposed Arctic drilling and the National Rifleman’s Association, as well as urging support for Planned Parenthood.

As of Thursday morning, the petition addressed to House Speaker John Boehner, who represents McKinley’s native Ohio and is a vocal opponent of renaming Denali, boasted more than 80,000 signatures.

Guess OJ is not going to provide a source of his made up stastic about the popularity of ACA because, well, it's made up.

How about a political deal to restore ALL major US airports to their original names? Ie, balance renaming DCA back to Washington National with renaming JFK back to Idlewild? It would also solve the silly confusion over where Burbank Airport (BUR) is since they renamed it to Bob Hope Airport and people associate Bob Hope more with Palm Springs than with Burbank. (It's Johnny Carson they associate the most with Burbank, isn't it?)

I do not care what the name of the airport is as long as it stays DCA where I am often. Never miss an opportunity to make others happy, even if you have to leave them alone in order to do it. ~Author Unknown
