Can You Guess the Busiest Airline Route in the World?

Can you guess what the busiest airline route in the world is? Routesonline.com has tallied up the numbers to reveal the routes that see the highest amounts of traffic. It’s probably tempting to assume that a high-profile route like the one between New York and Los Angeles would come in first. However, that’s not the case. The busiest route in the world may be one that you’ve never heard of before.

Which airline route is the busiest on the planet?

It turns out that the route between Seoul and Jeju wins first place. Travelers who take this route leave from Gimpo Airport in Seoul and head to the glistening island of Jeju off the coast of the Korean Peninsula.

This short-haul route is used by more than 13.4 million people annually. What’s more, the route has an average of 180 scheduled flights every day. That means that you can take off about once every eight minutes on an average day. A total of 36,877 passengers use the route daily.

What makes people so attracted to this route?

The answer is relaxation. It actually transports people from the bustling streets of Seoul to the relaxing, sandy shores of gorgeous Jeju in what can seem like a flash. Jeju is famed for resorts that pepper a landscape of white sands and volcanic remnants.

The recent analysis is full of surprises.

It turns out that 70 of the 100 busiest routes in the world are located in the Asia-Pacific region. What’s more, the top 10 routes are all located in the Asia-Pacific region. This might shock people who had just assumed that the world’s busiest routes would be concentrated in the United States. However, the truth remains that the United States is still the largest aviation market in the world.

What else might surprise you? Nine of the routes that made the top 10 are domestic. The most popular international route in the world is the one between Hong Kong and Taiwan. However, that route comes in seven slots behind the Seoul-to-Jeju route in the overall picture.

How much are travelers spending on the most popular routes in the world?

The average cost of a ticket for the world’s busiest routes is just over $170. The route between John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and London Heathrow Airport is the most expensive of all. That route has an average base fare that’s close to $650 per passenger. A Turkish domestic route between Izmir and Sabiha Gokcen is the least expensive one on the list. A seat for that route costs just $55 per person.

Scott, to be absolutely correct the busiest international route is actually Hong Kong to Taipei Taoyoun. Hong Kong also has several flights to Kaohsiung (more than there are to LHR) and Taichung daily. To say it’s simply Hong Kong to Taiwan is somewhat akin to saying LHR to the USA. Mrs Ourmanin is a Kaohsiung native and I couldn’t let that one pass!!
