Business As Usual For Flyers on 9/11

Despite international concerns of possible terrorist activity on September 11, frequent flyers opted to travel as usual, noting minimal security changes.
Amid the memorial services being held throughout the U.S. for those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, flyers expressed little concern for traveling on the 13th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. According to USA Today, a sample of 30 of their Road Warriors — a group of travelers and flight attendants who fly frequently — reported “no obvious boost to security this week.” The sample group also said they were not concerned about traveling on the anniversary.
“I have taken five flights this week and do not notice any changes, but some changes may not be obvious to travelers,” said Amy Sewell, who flew from Phoenix to Chicago on Thursday.
Some airports did admit to enhancing their security presence this week. Matt Brelis, a spokesman for Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), told USA Today that “security is multi-layered and constantly evolving.” Although no specific details were given, Brelis stated that “there will be a more visible presence at the airport this week than folks might ordinarily see.”
Ron Carter, a flight attendant, told USA Today that airlines are attentive year-round. “Personally I think about [the risk of an attack] all the time,” he said, but added that on September 11, he is “overly cautious and further prepared than any other day of the year.”
