British Airways Launches Half-Price Avios Redemptions

British Airways has launched a half-price Avios redemption offer for World Traveller tickets to over 90 long-haul destinations.
This promotion is valid for Avios redemptions made before June 17, for travel between September 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019 and there’s no need to register. The discount will automatically appear when you book eligible rewards flights.
No registration is needed for this offer – the discounted Avios rate will automatically appear when booking eligible rewards flights.

Even with the fees this is a good deal on some routes. Off-peak IAH/DFW/AUS/MSY-LHR is 16000 roundtrip plus 4c/pt redemption - an excellent value. Availability is wide open, as well.

I'm seeing wide availability of normal tickets on BA in the New York to London market during the promotion period for $528 round trip (and even less on some other major carriers such as Delta and Virgin). Why squander 20,000 Avios points and $514 in taxes and fuel surcharges when you can just buy a ticket for $14 more?
Halve their ridiculous extra fees and charges and people might take some notice.
