Man Who Died After Biting Flyer Had $63,000 Worth of Cocaine in Stomach

A 24-year-old Brazilian man who died shortly after biting a fellow passenger onboard his Aer Lingus flight Sunday reportedly had nearly 2 lbs. of cocaine in his stomach. The drugs were estimated to have a street value of around $63,000.

Monday’s event began after Flight 1485 took off from Lisbon. An autopsy revealed the assailant — John Kennedy Santos Gurjao — swallowed about 0.8kg of cocaine in the form of 80 wrapped pellets prior to departure. Officials say one of the pellets burst in Gurjao’s stomach while he was on the Dublin-bound flight.

Maybe 0.8 grams but not 0.8 KG. "reportedly had 2 lbs. of cocaine in his stomach...swallowed about 80 wrapped pellets of the drug prior to departure. Officials say one of the pellets burst in Gurjao’s stomach while he was on the Dublin-bound flight, causing him to ingest around 0.8kg of cocaine" This is what happens when you move people through school and graduate them without a proper math education. Fortunately, people in journalism are rarely allowed to handle money.

"one of the pellets burst in Gurjao’s stomach while he was on the Dublin-bound flight, causing him to ingest around 0.8kg of cocaine" That can't be right. 2lbs of cocaine in his stomach in total, or around 1kg. 80 pellets. That makes each pellet around 0.025kg (25g) of cocaine, not 0.8kg. Lethal dose of cocaine is around 1.2g, so this was 20x the lethal dose.

The writing here is at the very least confusing. The total amount he swallowed in all 80 pellets, tracing back to the Irish Times, was 0.8kg == 800g, i.e. nearly 2 pounds. When the single pellet burst, his body began attempting to absorb 800g/80 = 10g, which based on some quick googling (and the apparent results) looks like a serious overdose, but is not what "ingest[ed] around 0.8kg of cocaine" implies.
