Black Box From Egypt Crash “Confirms Smoke”

The black boxes recovered from a May 19 EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea have shown that smoke detectors were triggered in the lavatory of the aircraft and in the avionics area beneath the cockpit shortly before the plane plunged into the water, killing all 66 passengers. The recorded information confirms the validity of automated electronic messages sent from the plane, according to authorities. One black box was recovered from a depth 3,000 meters in the Mediterranean, and the second, a cockpit recorder, is undergoing repairs in Paris. The Egyptian committee investigating the craft believes that a portion of the front section of the aircraft’s wreckage “showed sign of high temperature damage.” The cause of the crash still remains unknown.
