Biologists Seek to Fix Bird Gore Problem at Lambert Airport
Biologists Alec Sonnek and Paul Flicek are conducting research in order to reduce the amount of plane-on-bird collisions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). In a recent profile in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and USA Today, the two scientists detail their research methodology, including startling birds with propane cannons and analyzing snarge.
Also, I learned today that the word for bird gore produced by aircraft collision is “snarge.” People needed a specific word in order to save on time while discussing this phenomenon.
