Austrian Resort’s ‘Smart Locks’ Hacked

Seehotel Jägerwirt, an Austrian four-star resort, fell victim to a series of attacks by hackers that included the electronic “smart locks” on the doors of guests’ rooms. Hackers succeeded in preventing guests at the resort from entering their rooms and prevented new key cards from being issued.

Seehotel Jägerwirt eventually paid the hackers in Bitcoin in exchange for the reactivation of its systems. Managing Director Christoph Brandstätter told Bleeping Computer that none of the resort’s guests were locked inside rooms during the attack due to fire codes that enforce the ability to open doors from the inside.
