Australian hoteliers can now offer lower rates for direct bookings via telephone and walk-ins – though not through their websites – in a new agreement with online booking agencies like Expedia and Booking.com.

“They [hotels] will now be able to offer lower rates through telephone bookings and walk-ins, offer special rates and deals to customer loyalty groups, in addition to offering deals via Expedia and Booking.com,” said Chairman of Australia’s competition watchdog Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Rod Sims said in a statement.

Previously, hotels were unable to offer the lower rates due to contractual clauses.
