Are You A Member of the Mile Cry Club?

Have you ever found yourself crying through most of the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel while in business class on a Hainan Airlines flight to Chengdu? Asking for a friend (ok, fine, that friend is me).

If you have, not only are you not alone, you’re an official member of the Mile Cry Club: people who catch themselves blubbering at Amazon dramedies, rom coms and other frivolous airline movie fare then wondering what, exactly, is wrong with them. The short answer? Hypoxia.

That’s the theory that researchers published in The Boston Globe while looking for reasons why our emotions get so weird while we’re in the air. Hypoxia is caused by inadequate blood oxygen that can be triggered by low cabin air pressure. And hypoxia can make it harder for you to regulate your emotions. Some people freak out because the person in front of them tried to reclined their seat, some people start sobbing in the middle of “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Have you joined the Mile Cry Club? Let us know which bit of in-flight entertainment sent you over the edge, where you were headed and who you were flying.

I'm definitely part of this club but not because of the inflight entertainment usually but rather because of the places I am going to or leaving from. Whenever I am flying away from where my partner is, I am fighting against the tears (a good crew and nice booze up the front of the plane definitely helps tiding me over that!). And there have been many times that I was crying out of excitement or happiness, a flight to San Diego comes to mind which was the first time in about 20 years that I got this beautiful city. But I always get very emotional when I fly back into Germany which is my country of birth but I get there only every second or third year or so these days. But then also likewise, on the way back, if I get nice views flying back into Sydney and can see the beaches and the Harbour with the iconic Opera House, that also gets me to tears sometimes.

It was “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and I was flying YYZ to YVR on Air Canada. I hadn’t seen the movie since I was a kid and I definitely didn’t remember the plot.

No the opposite-hysterical laughter on AA Of course the “ plastic bag lady”who was “ lying flat” with the tray table down and had her dinner spilled all over her and couldn’t escape it because of the position she was in ,is what really made me laugh.Luckily for me tI think they thought I was laughing at Table 19 ( not really)
