American Flight to Unmasked Flyers: “Hey Hey, Goodbye”

When three people were removed from an American Airlines flight over face coverings, the rest of the passengers were quick to let them know how they felt. As the group collected luggage and were escorted off, other flyers began singing “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.”

In today’s environment, passengers being asked to leave an aircraft because they won’t wear a required face covering is not uncommon. However, one flight out of (where else) Miami International Airport (MIA) had a particular farewell for offending flyers aboard an American Airlines flight. Miami NBC affiliate WTVJ-TV reports a group was serenated by the other commuters as they were escorted off the flight.

Na Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye to Flyers Not Wearing Face Coverings

The video was originally posted to the Twitter account Only in Dade. According to the original post, three flyers were removed from the extremely delayed flight. Two were removed for not complying with the federal face mask mandate, while the third was asked to leave for arguing with the flight crew. When police boarded to get the passengers off the flight, a group towards the middle of the aircraft started singing to them — choosing the classic hit by Steam: “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.”

In a statement, the carrier confirmed that the aircraft was returned to the terminal after pushing back, and the group was asked to leave. They praised the team members for how they handled the situation.

“American Airlines Flight 1469, with service from Miami (MIA) to Houston (IAH), returned to the gate to deplane two customers who refused to comply with crew member instructions or adhere to federal face covering requirements,” an American spokesperson noted in a statement to WTVJ. “We thank our team members for their professionalism and apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

Although entertaining, the issue is the latest in a long line of poorly behaved passengers caught on video at Miami. In August 2021, a veteran turned violent towards gate agents after experiencing a mental health crisis in the terminal, while blows were thrown on an arriving Frontier Airlines flight when one passenger allegedly used a racial slur towards another.

Unruly Passenger Incidents Continue to Rise on U.S. Flights

Even though the face covering requirement for flights has been in place for over a year, unruly passenger reports are constantly on the rise. According to figures released by the Federal Aviation Administration on September 15, 2021, the agency has received 4,284 unruly passenger reports, with 3,123 being related to mask-related incidents.

NOBODY has the "right" to endanger the lives of others. Ban them from flying (all airlines) for good. A dozen or two of those will possibly stop these dumbasses. Then a vaccine mandate for all passengers, just like the airline staff. They're afraid of losing some passengers but I'm of the opinion they would get more not less, if it's made safe

Risking other people's lives? Those other people should just get vaccinated. Simple as that.

Come on they were being mostly peaceful and compliant. Isn't that the new standard nowadays?

Good riddance. Non-compliant people are not just being difficult and inconveniencing everyone else, they're essentially saying they're fine with risking other people's lives for their own personal comfort. I for one don't want to fly with such people. And multi-layer cloth masks DO prevent the spread of Covid, if worn correctly and conscientiously. Single layer t-shit fabric masks worn loosely without covering the entire mouth and nose will not prevent the spread.
