American Flight Makes Unscheduled Landing Because It Was Too Heavy

An American Airlines flight en route to Charlotte, North Carolina, was diverted to Phoenix on Friday because it was too heavy.

The flight – 1772 from San Francisco – made its landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) after it was deemed overweight and could not complete the journey. After making its stop, the flight continued onward around 6:00 a.m.

Come on, it's clear, the FA's are the culprits!!!

Sounds like the media got it wrong again because this does not add up. While it is possible to be to heavy to land at a given airport due to short runway(s), terrain for a go-around, etc, there is a huge missing piece here. More likely, someone thought they heard one thing and it reality it was another By the way, you cannot dump fuel on the A-319/320/321 series aircraft.

I guess I was too subtle. Head winds can slow a plane down. If these winds were not expected, then the plane burns more fuel than expected thus requiring a stop. These sorts of things not uncommon on TCONs. On TATLs, when a single aisle plane is used, they are not uncommon.

I've never heard of such a thing. I have been on 3 flights where they had to dump fuel in order to make it light enough for a safe landing! It happened on a Northwest DC-9 due to a loss of cabin pressure, a Northwest 727 due to a loss of cabin pressure, and a KLM 747-400 which lost an engine over the Atlantic and had to turn back to Amsterdam. This plane being too heavy and landing sounds more dangerous unless they dumped fuel before landing.

To lighten their load, if everyone went to the bathroom before departure, could they have prevented a mandatory diversion.
