American Express Revamps Travel Benefits for 2021 Travel

As travelers eagerly look towards travel in 2021, American Express is shaking up the benefits of their premium charge cards to encourage renewal. New benefits include offers on Avis Car Rentals and trips booked through their travel agency, American Express Travel.

American Express is making major benefit changes to their lineup of charge cards, with promises of new offers also coming to their co-branded cards with Delta SkyMiles, Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. In a press release, the financial institution announced a new suite of bonuses for cardholders, ranging from credits for Avis Car Rentals to complimentary hotel nights.

Amex Gold and Platinum Cardholders Get New Travel Benefits

In the latest American Express Trendex report, over two-thirds of respondents said they planned to take a trip in 2021, while just over one-in-four said they were planning to travel within two months of the December 2020 survey date. Reflecting the pent-up demand for travel, the company is adding a number of benefits for flights, hotels and car rentals.

The first round of benefits is available to those holding one of the premium charge cards: The Gold Card from American Express, and the Platinum Card from American Express. When booking an eligible stay at The Hotel Collection through American Express Travel, Gold cardmembers and Platinum cardholders (holding either the business or consumer version) can take advantage of either a complimentary night or $150 property credit at participating properties. When Platinum cardholders book at a Fine Hotels + Resorts location, the offer changes to either a complimentary night or property credits of $250 or more. In both situations, required booking dates, travel dates, and terms apply.

Business and consumer Platinum cardholders will also soon get discounts on select flights. A selection of lower fares will be made available on select routes, flights and seats, with discounts of up to 20 percent off the published price. The fares will be available with participating airlines between Jan. 10 and Mar. 31, 2021, for travel between Jan. 10 and May 31, 2021. Again, terms will apply.

Finally, cardholders will have their choice between two rental car promotions. On pre-paid car rentals booked through American Express Travel, those who have a card earning Membership Rewards can either pay for car rentals using Pay with Points, or earn 2X Membership Rewards points on pre-paid rentals through Amextravel.com.

For Platinum cardholders who had an open and active account as of Nov. 1, 2021, one of the Amex Offers available to them is with Avis Car Rental. After activating the offer, Platinum cardmembers can get $75 back on two occasions after spending over $250 on eligible Avis purchases. As with all American Express offers, terms apply on all the offers.

Co-Brand Partner Cards to Get Extra Benefits in Coming Weeks

While the first round is reserved to American Express branded cards, the company says they will expand to cards with their co-brand partners “in the coming weeks.” The cards teased on their website include the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card and the Hilton Honors American Express Card.

So is this a downgrade to FHR? No more free breakfasts and $100 amenity credit? It’s either the free night or a $250 credit and not both?

Surely the FHR/THC benefits are no different to the offers that have always been available? They were offering a free night (with a min stay of 2, 3 or 4 nights already. And there were property credits anyway.

The more these “adjustments” happen to travel cards the less valuable they and points are. Status is being given away for the sake of “transaction” fees, Like “arnie” at Marriott who doesn’t give a damn about his real FF travelers the quality of properties is being sacrificed for quantity. Like many FF’ers have been assessing their “wallets’ and whats inside them I have cancelled 50% of my travel cards including my Amex PLT which I have had since 2002. It one really bores down into the return versus ever increasing fees its just not worth it there are deals out there that outlay Amex.
