American Airlines Promised Free Seats to Everyone

In a Tweet that went up at roughly 7am this morning, American Airlines seemed to offer every one of their followers a free seat:

To which a ton of travelers responded that they were packing their bags and ready to go.

Unfortunately for those eager passengers, the Tweet disappeared from @AmericanAir roughly an hour after it was posted. An American Airlines spokesperson later explained:

“We were actually replying to a customer that had a question about seat assignments on American Airlines. Our reply inadvertently left off the Twitter handle of the person who had asked the original question.”

Then they doubled down to say that “free” didn’t mean a gratis seat, but an available one in the main cabin:

“However, the tweet is true: customers are not required to purchase an advanced seat assignment,” the spokesperson continued, “Customers may select a free seat, or pay for a preferred or main cabin extra seat. If a free seat is not available, a seat will either be automatically provided at check-in or at the airport.”

No word yet on how many passengers actually showed up to the airport expecting a free flight.

Maybe AA needs to hire people who can respond clearly. Twitter is dangerous.
