AA, Delta Flights Are Going Without After Listeria Found in Catering Kitchen

AA, Delta Flights Are Going Without After Listeria Found in Catering Kitchen

There has been a Listeria outbreak at LAX.

American Airlines has said that it won’t be using services from catering company Gate Gourmet, which is also the food supplier for Delta Airlines.

American spokeswoman Katie Cody says that the airline has decided not to use the supplier starting November 1 and has plans to notify all passengers affected by the decision, including international travelers. The airline is taking steps to provide passengers with alternative arrangements including offering snacks at select gates and different catering options as well as vouchers for future flights.

Various agencies reported finding Listeria on surfaces in the preparation facility, but Cody says that the airline is unaware of any food that was affected and of any individuals that have become ill.

Delta Airlines and Gate Catering didn’t respond to the agency that broke the story and American Airlines is apparently exercising an abundance of caution after learning about the presence of Listeria.

The Centers for Disease Control website reports that listeriosis is a serious infection that primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, people over 65 and anyone with a weakened immune system. Around 1,600 are infected by the bacteria each year and around 260 die from it.

This isn’t the first incidence of Listeria at LAX. Back in 2015, a federal food inspection turned up results that could potentially affect the health of airline passengers. That was another catering company that provides food for airlines, Flying Food Group.

If you’re flying on American or Delta out of LAX anytime soon, you may want to pack your own meal to be on the safe side. American has said they will provide alternatives for passengers for a week while the catering company cleans up.

LAX (and MIA, for that matter) are really third world airports best avoided, if at all possible.

Except that our US “3rd World airports” have federal food inspection guidelines which are actually practiced and enforced so we the consumer are alerted to health issues like Listeria.

Nearly 1 in 6 cases result in death.

Kudos to our regulatory agencies and their inspectors.

Better to have no food than contaminated food, though you can’t always be sure you’ll have time to buy food on a tight connection.

The cost savings to AA & Delta are going to be enourmous now that they aren’t providing food that we paid for in our ticket purchase…a free snack pack is not of equal value.

Fortunately, I am on a raw red meat diet so I always pack my own meals anyhoo. It actually offers the best of all current fads. Its the “caveman plan” combined with RAW and topped off with locally purchased from my neighborhood farmer.
