American Airlines Bumps up Booze Prices

Effective October 1, American Airlines will raise the price of all alcoholic drinks served aboard flights by $1, bringing the price of beer in the main cabin to $8 and all other libations to $9.

“Over the last few years, we’ve continued to improve the selections available on board with more craft beer choices, premium liquor and new wines,” said Curtis Blessing, an American Airlines spokesperson.

The move comes just a week after the airline confirmed that it would be increasing its fees for checked passenger baggage.

I never buy adult beverages when flying in economy, because of the absurd pricing. At $4, I might buy a beer or two, and the airline would enjoy a very healthy markup. With beer at $8, I will stick to the free water or soft drink. Most businesses strive to maximize total sales, which does not usually translate to the greatest profit on each incremental item sold. Apparently the airlines are satisfied that 5% of passengers are alcoholics, and that group will continue to buy drinks at any price.

Disgusting and obscene prices. But people will continue to pay because you have no options while stuck on a plane.
