American Airlines and JetBlue Launch Partnership with 33 New Routes and Codeshares

Despite not having support from the JetBlue pilots union, American Airlines and JetBlue are launching their codeshare partnership with 33 new routes and codeshare flights between the two. By Feb. 25, 2021, American will offer airfare to nearly 50 codeshare markets operated by JetBlue.

After announcing their highly-anticipated Northeast U.S. partnership, American and JetBlue are opening for business with a total of nearly 80 codeshare flights and new service to the Caribbean and South America. The new services were debuted in a press release from both airlines.

Partnership includes just under 80 codeshares and 33 new flights form airlines

Under the agreement, the two carriers will operate around 80 codeshares between them. American flyers will have access to 49 codeshare flights aboard JetBlue, while JetBlue customers can book over 25 routes on American.

In addition, American will also introduce several new domestic and international routes out of Boston and New York. The new Boston flights will include seasonal service to Asheville and Wilmington, North Carolina; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and Traverse City, Michigan, along with year-round service from Boston to Columbus, Ohio. From New York’s LaGuardia International Airport (LGA), seasonal service will include flights to Key West, Myrtle Beach, Pensacola, Savannah, Georgia; and Rapid City, South Dakota. The two year-round flights being added to the New York region are LaGuardia to Kansas City, Missouri, and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Orange County John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana, California.

More importantly for domestic flyers, the new options will give northeastern flyers more options to get to key marketplaces aboard both airlines. Out of Boston and New York, the two airlines will offer more service to major cities including Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

On the international side, American will use the opportunity to launch six new international routes to the Caribbean and South America. Starting May 6, 2021, American will offer daily service from John F. Kennedy International Airport to three Colombian cities: Bogota, Cali and Medellin. Other new flights launching from JFK include Santiago, Chile three times per week, and weekend service to the islands of St. Lucia, and Turks and Caicos.

Next Steps Include More Codesharing and Earning Miles on Either Airlines

With the partnership started, both airlines will continue to align their programs to the benefit of their customers. By Spring 2021, both JetBlue and American will allow flyers to earn either TrueBlue or AAdvantage miles on both airlines, along with reciprocal recognition of loyalty status.

The new partnership is moving forward without the support of the JetBlue aviators represented by the Air Lines Pilots Association (ALPA). Earlier in the week, over half of the unionized workers voted against giving JetBlue certain provisions on their collective bargaining agreement.
