Alaska-Virgin Merger Approved by DOJ

On Tuesday, Alaska Airlines announced that the U.S. Department of Justice had approved the carrier’s potential acquisition of Virgin America by Alaska Airlines.

“We couldn’t be more excited about receiving DOJ clearance for our merger with Virgin America,” said Alaska Airlines CEO Brad Tilden.

“With this combination now cleared for take-off, we’re thrilled to bring these two companies together and start delivering our low fares and great service to an even larger group of customers.”

Court approval is still necessary for finalization of the deal, but the Justice Department’s approval signals a major victory for Alaska Airlines as it closes the circle on the merger between airlines. The carrier anticipates that the deal could be finalized “in the very near future.”
