Alaska Shrinks Down to Other Airlines’ Level

Alaska Airlines has officially announced that, beginning June 4, 2018, their carry-on size limit will be shrinking down to 22 x 14 x 9 inches.

Why the change? Alaska Airlines’ official statement is that they’re doing it for the partners.

Currently, Alaska Airlines’ carry-on size is 24 x 17 x 10, which is slightly larger than those of most other airlines, including their partner airlines like American Airlines (also 22 x 14 x 9), British Airways (slightly smaller at 22 x 18 x 10) or Cathay Pacific (22 x 14 x 9).

This puts passengers in the position, says Alaska, of finding that their carry-on bags are too large for their connecting flights and that they have to pay additional fees to stow them in the cargo area.

But, Alaska Airlines wants its customers to know, its carry-ons are still free and passengers can still bring along a personal item like a purse or briefcase in addition to their (smaller) carry-on bag.

The airline hopes that two months will be long enough for all of their customers to get on board, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s still a little confusion at the gate come June.

He thought he could check it but got stopped by the gate agent. Had to check, and is now picking up at carousel.
