Airlines Ditch Nigeria Due to Economic Downturn

Coming on the heels of United Airlines’ decision to cease service to Nigeria, several international carriers may follow suit and halt operations in the West African nation due to a drop in oil prices that has drained its foreign exchange reserves. On May 12, Iberia suspended its route to Nigeria, followed by United, which cited a lack of demand and difficulty collecting payments as reasons for plans to cut off routes at the end of June. John Ojikutu, CEO of Centurion Aviation Consultancy, said: “Besides an inability to repatriate profit, passengers are reducing because the economy is going down.”
