AAA Won’t Issue a Travel Forecast for Memorial Day

The Best Travel Insurance

The latest of the unprecedented, coronavirus-related travel changes is coming to us from AAA. For the first time in 20 years, the agency will not be issuing a travel forecast.

Memorial Day weekend is normally one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. In 2019, for example, roughly 43 million Americans hit the road for the holiday. The lowest figure reported by AAA was during the 2009 recession when only 31 million traveled over the three-day weekend.

This year, because of social distancing and shelter in place policies, AAA expects travel numbers to be even lower. Says Paula Twidale, senior vice president for AAA Travel: “With social distancing guidelines still in practice, this holiday weekend’s travel volume is likely to set a record low.”

However, on a more optimistic travel note, AAA says that they expect to make predictions about fall holiday travel if enough travel restrictions are lifted by then.
