AA Business Shrinking at Phoenix Sky Harbor

American Airlines is shrinking at Phoenix Sky Harbor, cutting flights and shifting to smaller planes on many routes. Sky Harbor’s 2016 passenger count through October is down 1.6 percent, the worst performance among the nation’s 10 busiest airports. American calls the changes “fine-tuning.”

“Is (passenger traffic in Phoenix) going to continue to go down? The way we anticipate it right now, we don’t anticipate it will go down forever,” said Vasu Raja, vice president of network planning. “How it changes still sort of remains to be seen.”

Phoenix serves a purpose for American that St. Louis didn't. There are markets better served via Phoenix than either DFW or LAX, the alternatives. I would think that there are some new markets which ultimately may be added out of PHX, including cities in the "mountain west" are including Montana, Idaho, and possibly even the Dakotas, moving forward.

Just ask STL if they "fine tuned" them out of being a hub. Just sayin.

No one should be surprised they've "fine-tuned" past hubs to non-existence!
