I feel like you have left out the most important part of the story. The cabin crew kicked them off the plane and they were forced to take a later flight.

I've experienced AA racism about 17 yrs ago when I bought 2 first class tickets DFW-SFO for one of my African-American surgeons, travelling to a medical meeting with our wives. On the flight, my colleague and spouse were not served breakfast. It looked totally stupid to my wife and me. Turned out, the AA flght attendants assumed they were "non-rev's" who were to be excluded from meal service. My surgeon and his wife had too much class to make a stink. It was totally bad, since I had hosted multiple surgeons on the trip. But I've never forgotten it. Reminded me of the meal counters of Jim Crow South during the 60's. AA has always had endemic racism, IMHO, and they have needed to confront it for a long time.
