A TSA Agent Might Be Driving Your Next Uber or Lyft

Are you out of work thanks to the government shutdown and need to make some money? The gig economy wants you to know it’s there for you – and many people, who stand to make money from referrals, are taking to social media to recruit furloughed workers for companies and delivery services like Lyft, Uber, and Postmates.

The hashtag #governmentshutdown is trending – but not for the reasons you may think. According to Buzzfeed News, gig economy companies like Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, and Postmates are advertising their need for employees over social media posts targeted to furloughed employees. People that work for the companies already are making posts with referral codes to sign up government employees that aren’t working, and since they make money from every referral, it could be considered a win-win.

Here’s one from a Lyft driver, reported by Buzzfeed:

“Affected by the #GovernmentShutdown ? Earn $1,350 guaranteed by driving with Lyft. Apply here, and give 135 rides in 30 days. Terms apply.”

And another from a Postmates worker:

“To those effected by the #GovernmentShutdown & live in #NewYorkCity area signup for Postmates & you could qualify to make at least $1025 & a free #portablecharger for the first 70 deliveries . Use code FL-x2jm or here is a link:”

Lyft, for its part, confirmed to Buzzfeed News that it’s accepting applications from furloughed workers, stating in an email that the company will “encourage those in need of extra income to consider driving with Lyft,” which is “a reliable way to make ends meet and can help these workers fill in the gap during this uncertain time.”

I have no sympathy for these people. First, they're all going to get paid (boo!) for sitting on their rears doing nothing and every bank is bending over backwards to help all these "non essential" personnel. Second, if they didn't see this coming then perhaps they're not the brightest of people and maybe we shouldn't be employing them as govt. employees? As for TSA agents... time for all the airports to use private security.
