Lufthansa Begins Integration of ITA Airways

Regular ITA Airways flyers will experience a number of changes, including terminal moves and integrations with Lufthansa’s Miles & More loyally program.
ITA Airways flyers will now be able to use their miles for flights across Lufthansa Group’s network, while Miles & More flyers will be able to collect points when aboard the Italian airline.

The moves come as Lufthansa Group begins full integration of ITA into their network starting on February 3, 2025.

Integration Includes Terminal Sharing, Code Sharing, and Lounge Sharing

Lufthansa’s integration of ITA Airways is part of the minority stake it took into the carrier in 2023. After taking a $348 million stake in the carrier for 41% interest, ITA agreed to become the fifth network airline for the German company.

Effective immediately, Miles & More members can earn and redeem miles aboard ITA flights, while members of the Italian carrier’s Volare loyalty program can earn points when flying with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.

As another loyalty benefit, Lufthansa and ITA will offer qualifying flyers mutual access to their airport lounges. ITA flyers will now get access to around 130 new Lufthansa group lounges.

At Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, ITA will move their operations to the same terminal as Lufthansa’s airlines. This means ITA flights will arrive and depart in Frankrfurt’s Terminal 1 and Munich’s Terminal 2. Lufthansa says their operations are already consolidated at ITA’s hubs in Roma and Milan.

The two carriers are also planning to better align their schedules both with each other’s operations and with the greater Star Alliance. Lufthansa says flight connections between the four major hubs – Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, and Rome – are “optimized and better distributed throughout the day” to ensure comfortable connections to long haul destinations. ITA has also begun their exit from SkyTeam to join Star Alliance by the first half of 2026.
