Spirit Launches Two Credit Cards With Added Loyalty Benefits

After re-designing their loyalty program, Spirit Airlines is following up by adding two different Mastercard products with partner Bank of America. The no-annual-fee Free Spirit Travel Mastercard and Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard both come with elite status, points with every purchase and access to an airline concierge.

Spirit Airlines is adding even more benefit to their rewards program through new credit cards from Bank of America. The low-cost carrier announced the launch of two new Mastercard products, offering even more benefits to those who regularly fly aboard the company’s trademark yellow aircraft.

Benefits Include Points Pooling, Companion Flight Vouchers and “Yellow Glove” Concierge

To better align with the new Free Spirit loyalty program, the carrier is relaunching their credit card options. Flyers can now choose between a no-annual-fee card with World Mastercard benefits, or a World Elite Mastercard with a $79 annual fee.

With the no-annual-fee card, flyers can earn two Free Spirit points on all Spirit purchases, while earning 1 point per dollar everywhere else. Cardholders can also get 5,000 bonus points on their card anniversary date after spending $10,000 on purchases in the prior 12 months.

For the annual fee, the Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard comes with more benefits, including more points per purchase. Using the card earns three points per $1 spent on Spirit purchases, two points per $1 spent on dining and grocery purchases, and one point per dollar everywhere else. Flyers can also get a $100 companion flight voucher on their card anniversary by spending $5,000 on qualifying purchases in the preceding 12 months. The voucher is single-use (meaning any credits for purchases under $100 are not carried over), and can only be used on a companion flight.

Spending on the Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard also earns elite qualifying points, at the rate of one point per $10 spent. Finally, cardholders do not pay redemption fees for their rewards, reflecting a value of up to $50 for flights booked less than 28 days before departure.

Both cards come with the ability to pool Free Spirit points with up to eight friends and family members of their choosing, along with Zone 2 “shortcut boarding” with every flight. Those who don’t hold status can also get a 25 percent in-flight rebate on food and drink purchased in flight, along with access to a “Yellow Glove” airline concierge to assist flyers when necessary.

The new credit products round out a completely new program for the Florida-based carrier. The airline also launched two new credit cards for the Central American market with Promerica, along with a sub-prime credit card for targeted customers. Each new card is designed to re-engage flyers with the airline, and encourage more than vacation booking aboard Spirit.

Status Matches, Redesigned Loyalty Interface Next Steps for Spirit

As their new loyalty program progresses, the carrier says their next steps are to improve the customer experience online. The airline will soon roll-out a new loyalty interface across their website and mobile app, complete with information on loyalty status and progress towards the next tier. The airline will also soon offer a status challenge for those who hold an elite tier with another program. Details on the three-month challenge are expected to be announced in the coming months.

What would be more popular on FT......declaring loyalty to Spirit, or being a Trump supporter?
