Azul Airlines Brazil Is Now in TSA Precheck

Travelers can now count Azul Airlines, Brazil’s largest carrier, among the 73 domestic and international airlines that participate in the US Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) TSA Precheck. Not only are they the first Brazilian carrier to join, but also they’re just the second South American entry, after Colombia’s Avianca.

Now available at more than 200 U.S. airports, since December 2011, TSA Precheck has allowed millions of passengers to bypass certain bothersome steps implemented at regular security lines; indeed, TSA Precheck users pass through security without having to remove their laptops, shoes, 3-1-1 liquids (liquids containing more than 3.4 oz./100mL are normally not allowed), belts, or lighter jackets.

Interested travelers would have to first apply and pass a background check for TSA Precheck; once approved, the fee is $85 for five years of coverage. Thereafter, every time you book a flight with one of the participating airlines, enter your “Known Traveler Number” into the reservation.

The program is open to US citizens (USC), US nationals, lawful permanent residents (LPR), members of the US armed forces, members of any of the three US Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler programs (Global Entry, Nexus, and Sentri), some frequent flier program members, and children 12 and under of parents already holding TSA Precheck.

To renew one’s membership with TSA Precheck, most of the time it can be done online. Moreover, one can renew up to six months in advance.

Azul Airlines passengers also have more good news awaiting them later this year. On December 16th, they will be starting thrice-weekly nonstop service between Belo Horizonte (CNF) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL). As of today, Azul Airlines flies between Orlando (MCO) and Belo Horizonte, São Paulo-Campinas (VCP), and Recife (REC), and between Fort Lauderdale and Belém (BEL), São Paulo-Campinas, and Recife.
