Flight Attendants: Climate Change Is Putting Our Lives in Danger

Sara Nelson, the international president of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), has voiced her union’s support for the Green New Deal. Far from threatening jobs, she states that, if left unchecked, climate change is something that will devastate the environment and aviation.

Sara Nelson, the international president of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), has written of the organization’s support for the Green New Deal in an essay. Seeking to allay fears among those in the industry that this stimulus package will threaten jobs, she writes, “It’s not the solutions to climate change that kills jobs. Climate change itself is the job killer.”

Speaking of the link between climate change and the number of ever-increasing severe turbulence incidents – and most specifically, Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) – Nelson writes that this phenomenon presents a threat to onboard safety as well as to the wider economy and environment.

“As extreme weather events become more common, more and more flights never take off at all. Grounded flights mean lost pay for flight attendants, who earn an hourly wage while we’re in the air,” she explains.

Nelson adds, “Flight attendants’ jobs and lives are in danger if we don’t put a stop to this. But we also know the threat is far bigger than just aviation. If we don’t act swiftly, it will ground aviation and hurt the global community.”

Whether through technological advances that cut emissions or through implementing standards that bring it in-line with the Paris Agreement, the aviation industry, she goes on to say, has long been committed to reducing its environmental impact.

She entreats unions to support the package, saying, “Our federal government must spearhead a national mobilization that brings these efforts together, harnesses American ingenuity, creates millions of well-paying union jobs, and saves the planet for our children. That is the vision of the Green New Deal resolution.”

@SpartyAir: The real danger are people believing in these convenient lies you're propagating. They stop any effort to mitigate the dangers in its roots.

Didn't the Green New Deal call for migrating from air travel to rail? Do the FAs realize they are calling for the abolishing of their own jobs?

@Meltemi A 20 foot rise in ocean levels is not probably by 2100 using the worst case models At worst we are looking at about 2 six feet probably 3 ft. This hyperbole of a 20 foot is just Al Gore Propaganda 2.0 .

Climate change is settled science. The Pentagon recognizes it as a major threat to national security. Worldwide high temperature events are increasingly more frequent, CO2-induced acidification is causing destruction of coral reefs, polar icecaps are melting at an increasingly rapid rate, and the thawing of tundras, which will release even more CO2 and methane are some of the major effects that are occurring now. A graph of average temperatures, that shows a much more rapid increase over last few hundred years and is making new highs that would look great as a stock chart but in fact spells disaster for our kids and grandkids. Unlike the other warming events in earth's history, there are NO natural events to explain this. It's man-made CaptHolic, around half the US population lives in coastal zones. What do you thinks happens to our economy as the the coasts are threatened. A 20 ft rise puts Mar el Lago under 4 feet of water Maybe you have a spare room for some us, or at least the Trumps? Please, you all, take another look at this. This is serious and real issue. If you're still scoffing, Google the Dunning-Kruger effect ( I had to )
