American Airlines May Owe You Money

If you were a victim of being overcharged to check bags on American Airlines, your chance to get some of that money back is finally here through a settlement in a class action lawsuit against the airline. Here’s what you need to know about how to get your (likely pretty small) payout from the lawsuit.

If you flew with American Airlines between July 13, 2013, and June 7, 2018, and had to check a bag, it’s possible you were overcharged. But now, thanks to a settlement in a class action lawsuit, you can be reimbursed for what you paid – up to $200.

Basically, the lawsuit says that customers who were entitled to check bags for free were actually charged. The suit’s website explains:

This Case alleges that between July 13, 2013 and June 7, 2018 (“Case Timeframe”), American incorrectly charged certain customers baggage fees, breaching American’s contract with these customers. When customers buy tickets from American for air travel, a contract is formed in which American promises certain customers that they can check a certain number of their bags at no additional charge, depending on route of travel, cabin of service, frequent flyer status or other reasons. This case alleges that during the Case Timeframe, American breached its contract with certain customers by charging them to check one or more of their bags despite promises that they could do so at no additional cost.

If you wish to file a claim and try to get a payout, the lawsuit website has a link to a form you’ll need to fill out. But be warned – most class action lawsuits pay very little to those participating.

In our instances, if was AA's Latin American and Caribbean does that charged us incorrectly. I recall asking with agents at both the Tampa and Miami airports for multiple flights to Mexico and Guatemala about the fees. Whether I receive an email FROM AA is a different story. However, all I have to do is watch my emails for the AA ticket confirmation going back over the past several years.

In rewriting part of my last response, I made errors The correction should be According to the lawsuit info, AA has the info and would send you an email if you are one of the offended parties. That said, if you don’t have anything showing you were overcharged why should they pay you. I am a bit confused about how AA can identify NOW the people it improperly charged, instead of when the even happened

Is a person actually supposed to actually remember and have records on baggage fees from up to 5 years ago?
