Someone Did A Study of the 10 Most Hated People On A Plane

Hundreds of millions of people are taking to the sky this summer as summer vacations get underway. But along with all the annoyances of TSA regulations and airline rules come travel bummer: your fellow passengers. It turns out that there are a lot of gripes to be had with your fellow passengers, according to a recent study.

In what is no surprise to passengers with functioning olfactory sensors, smelly people make the worst fellow passengers. Although basic hygiene seems like it shouldn’t be an issue in an era with showers in airport lounges and shops available that sell products, it seems that not everyone takes the time to bathe before boarding.

Geoffrey Thomas, AirlineRatings’ editor in chief, which conducted the survey explains how malodorous travelers manage to get onto the plane, “With online or cellphone check-in now widespread, offending passengers are slipping through the traditional checks and only coming into contact with airline agents at the boarding gate. The agents, under pressure to get the flight away, let offenders slip through.”

Thomas also speculates that the perpetrators are either unaware or uncaring about their stench.

Although an overwhelming amount of people listed smelly people as the worst people on a plane, there are plenty of other annoyances too. They include: ill-behaved children, people that use the seat recliner feature, people that hog the armrest, people that have too many carry-ons, people that constantly need to use the lavatory, people that never stop talking, people that use the aisles as a gym, “high and mighty passengers,” and people that hog the window seat (and presumably block it from their aisle-mates views).

Flying isn’t the exclusive experience it used to be but a lot of these behaviors seem like they should be common courtesy—in or out of the sky.

"No Scents Makes Good Sense". It's not just body odors but the egregious use of perfumes.

Some of these are legit. Some are bogus. If you want to look out the window, book a window seat. Too many trips to the lav? Is there a legal limit? Should they ban men over 55 with prostate issues? Armrest hogs? Both armrests go to the poor guy in the middle seat. That’s protocol. And common courtesy.

"People that use the seat recliner feature"? If the seat was not meant to recline, then that feature would not be available.

Can I add FAs who provide no service on red eye flights but still manage to bang around all night to that list? Or is this just annoying pax?

I agree with most of this, but "hogging the window" is complete BS. Want control of the window shade, or the ability to see out at will? Book the window seat. Otherwise, enjoy your aisle access and STFU.
