Allegiant Airlines’ Cancellation Trouble Keeps Getting Worse
Well, this has turned out to be kind of a mess.
The trouble started on Wednesday, June 13th when a “rash” of flight cancellations hit Allegiant Air, leaving hundreds of customers scrambling to rebook their flights and get reimbursement. By Thursday afternoon, 32 flights had been canceled (18 flights for Thursday, eight flights for Friday and six flights on June 21). Two Friday flights were also rescheduled.
The trouble continued when the Las Vegas-based airline couldn’t quickly accommodate those cancelled-on customers because it didn’t have enough planes available.
According to Allegiant spokesperson Krysta Levy on Wednesday, the planned transition away from the MD-80 planes was the issue.
“We are in the process of transitioning to an all-Airbus fleet,” said Levy. “We have offered options to our passengers on canceled flights including re-accommodation to other flights or refunds.”
In a tweet to a passenger, Allegiant said: “supply chain issues delayed delivery dates for aircraft scheduled to join our fleet.”
Allegiant is currently in the process of replacing all of its MD-80s with new Airbus planes by 2019. The transition followed an investigation that found that the MD-80s, which are about 22 years old on average, failed at quadruple the rate of other airlines and had constant mechanical issues.
As passengers slowly get to their destinations, compensation and inconvenience are their most frequent complaints.
One passenger, Kevin Raper, was planning to fly back from Las Vegas last Friday but had to wait until Saturday after his flight was canceled.
“We are stranded and spending $1,000 a day in hotels and food because of your crappy service,” he Tweeted. “How do you plan to reimburse us and fix this?”
In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Raper said he and his traveling companions each received a $100 voucher — less than half the cost of a ticket. “Needless to say, it’ll be the last time we use them,” Raper said.
Another Allegiant customer, Scott Hooker, said that he was given around 24 hours notice that his flight was canceled and received a $150 flight voucher (the flight cost $156) and $225 as an apology.
“I was just surprised more than anything at the lack of any notice whatsoever,” he said. “We were within 24 hours and you’re telling me that you didn’t know about this?”

Am I reading this correctly - Allegiant canceled flights on the day of scheduled departure because Airbus was late delivering new aircraft? You’d think this would be the sort of thing that’s known and planned for weeks or even months in advance.
