Delta Flight Diverts Hundreds of Miles… for A Bathroom Break

Delta Flight Diverts Hundreds of Miles… for A Bathroom Break
Meg Butler

A direct Delta flight from New York City to Seattle was forced to make an unplanned stop in Billings, Montana — for an emergency bathroom break.

While enroute, the Boeing 757’s toilets “ceased functioning, with passengers queuing up and indicating they needed to visit the toilet,” according to a Delta incident report. “All toilets were full and passengers needed to ‘go really bad.”

Passengers were in such an emergency that the plane had to taxi to a cargo area to let passengers out via a stairway to “disembark to find relief of built-up pressures” when a gate was not immediately available.

I’m pleasantly surprised that they did this but I wonder if the real reason behind the stop was not the passengers but rather a bathroom emergency for the pilot or co-pilot.

I was once on an AA DFW-ZRH flight, on a 767-300 dual aisle plane, that diverted to JFK because HALF the bathrooms on the plane went out. (The bathrooms on this kind of plane have two sets of plumbing, which is why half of them went out, because that set of plumbing failed.) So it is really that unusual for a plane to divert if ALL of the bathrooms go out (whether the passengers ‘really need to go” yet or not)? I would just the more common diversion would be to the nearest hub, to change planes for the rest of journey.
