Sen. Schumer Lambastes Overhead Bin Ban
In response to United Airlines’ decision to ban the use of overhead bins for Basic Economy passengers, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has released a statement, criticizing the carrier’s policy.
“The overhead bin is one of the last sacred conveniences of air travel and the fact that United Airlines—and potentially others—plan to take that convenience away unless you pay up is really troubling,” Schumer said in a release.

Precisely why I refuse to fly United. Haven't flown them in over a decade. Love me some Southwest.
There is truth to rthib statement. Pay for it if you want it. If you don't and want the cheapest ticket for travel but basic economy. If he can't understand a simple new basic economy fare. The ULCC have them if you want it on a legacy carrier you can now purchase that fare. If you don't pay the regular economy fare. He's doing this to grand stand to show himself has a champion to the people but its a lack of knowledge or a willful use of disinformation to push his agenda.
There is a very simple explanation for why United does not allow carry-ons on the Basic Economy fare. Basic economy passengers board last. At that time, most if not all overhead bins will be full. If United gate checked bags for BE, then passengers WILL exploit this loophole to get a free checked bag, and will purposefully bring a larger bag knowing that it will be gate checked.
"This is why Schumer’s party lost, a lack of basic understand of economics." What a truly uninformed statement. ............... In theory UA will provide this no frills class of service at a price lower than the bag/seat/overhead included fare. However, the price of the included fare will become the new no frills fare, and the included fare will become more expensive. All the while the airline has a big grin on their face as they try to convince you that they are giving you more choices, and putting the travel experience in your hands.
Do you really think that they are lowering cost of ticket now that overhead bin storage isn't included? Fare are staying the same and services is decreasing. Next they will charge for a personal item, and after that they will charge you for a boarding pass which you can't fly without, Hey what do you know now they charge for there mobile app you need to check in with. This is a slippery slope
