Sonaisali Island Resort in Fiji provides an idyllic tropical escape with delicious food, warm hospitality and exotic black sand beaches flecked with gold.
The resort is a 25 minute drive from the International Airport and can be reached by local taxi for about $40 US round trip, or by prearranged pick-up with the resort, about $35 US round trip. The drive is bumpy but redeemed by gorgeous views as the road wends past lush sugar cane fields and colorful villages with mountains towering in the distance. The taxi drive ends at the wharf where guests are welcomed with beaming smiles by the staff before being helped aboard a sturdy little craft that motors across the short distance to the island.

Every room boasts views of the Pacific Ocean and room prices range from $222 US for a Beachfront Hotel Room to $328 US for a Beachfront Spa Bure which features a private spa set on the wide timber veranda, situated to capture South Pacific sunsets and ocean views. It’s also possible to book a two-bedroom Beachfront Family Bure. I stayed in the mid-range Ocean View Bure and loved it. Vaulted ceilings give a feeling of space and openness that is crucial in the oft-sweltering tropical heat. Ceiling fans provide sufficient cooling for normal days, but air-conditioning is available for piping hot ones. I slept like a rock in my large bed covered with pristine white linens and enjoyed sitting out on my private veranda when storms came through where I could listen to the rain falling on palm fronds.
Each room comes with a complimentary buffet breakfast that far surpasses your average Continental. I sat outdoors by the pool for my leisurely breakfast, loving the fresh paw-paw, passion fruit and watermelon drizzled with lime. When I’d satisfied my craving for tropical fruits, I indulged in a full English breakfast complete with bacon, roasted tomatoes and beans in tomato sauce, all washed down with fresh juices and copious amounts of strong coffee. It was a breakfast guaranteed to satisfy and gave me more than enough energy for hikes, boat rides and walks along the beach.
Remaining meals are available for purchase and include an array of Asia/Pacific, Indian and European cuisines that use fresh produce from the resort’s thriving vegetable farm, herb gardens, tropical orchards and hydroponic farm.
Activities are available for a range of lifestyles and budgets. Complimentary events include Fijian Meke cultural performances, Fijian cooking demonstrations and canoeing. Other activities such as local village trips, horse riding, and sailing can be booked at the activities desk.
