Thailand Now Under Military Control: How Safe Are You Traveling To or From Thailand?

May 23, 2014 by Brian Cohen

Due to a coup which occurred yesterday, Thailand is now under the control of Prayuth Chan-ocha, who is the general and chief of its military. Martial law has reportedly been established — complete with a nightly curfew from 10:00 in the evening until 5:00 in the morning until further notice, from which travel to the airport is supposedly exempt — and the constitution of Thailand has supposedly been thrown out...but what does that mean for you in terms of safety when traveling? Well — considering that there has been deadly violence reported in Thailand in the months leading up to the coup — you are probably no more in danger now than earlier this year or since December of 2013 and may even be safer today than yesterday...but let us learn from what FlyerTalk members have reported...

The purpose of the changes is to...

Allergies While Traveling: What Are The Solutions?

May 16, 2014 by Brian Cohen

Allergies can be bad enough to have at home and at work. They can be mildly annoying at best; but they can be debilitating and even life-threatening to the sufferer of an allergy...and it is not uncommon for people to suffer from greater than one allergy. However, allergies can become more significant when you are traveling. Certain situations which may not be a factor at home or at work can suddenly become major impediments which infringe on your enjoyment of travel. How do you deal with allergies when you travel? I am fortunate to never having been diagnosed with allergies nor suffer from their symptoms, which would certainly disqualify me as an expert on the subject. That does not decrease the significance of the fact that many FlyerTalk members do suffer from many different types of allergies, as evidenced by the hundreds of discussions posted on FlyerTalk. A small list of examples of allergies from which FlyerTalk members claim to suffer include but are not limited to the following...

Megabus: My Trip Report

May 23, 2014 by Brian Cohen

I recently had the opportunity to ride as a passenger aboard Megabus — a express bus service which offers transportation at a low cost between city centers in ten countries throughout North America and Europe — for the first time. A trip from Atlanta to South Florida came up at the last minute for me; and a search for a one-way airfare would minimally cost me $375.00. I searched for a one-way airfare because I was driving back using a rental car at a rate of $9.45 per day plus taxes and fees. The class of rental car was full size because I loaded the car with items I was bringing to a relative. The idea then struck me: I remember reporting on Megabus back in December of 2012 here at The Gate. Why not try that option?...

Not a Good Week For El Al: Emergency Landings, Disrupted Operations and Delays

May 20, 2014 by Brian Cohen

Several incidents have contributed to what has been a week of mishaps for El Al Israel Airlines Limited — including oxygen masks which unexpectedly deployed and delayed a flight; a cracked windshield which caused pilots to return the airplane to its origination airport; an aircraft door damaged by children which delayed a flight; and a pilot who collapsed on the controls in the cockpit during a flight which resulted in an emergency diversion. Let’s get started...
