Second Checked Bag No Longer Free in Transpacific Flights in Economy Class on All Nippon Airways and United Airlines

All Nippon Airways has reportedly sent a notice to its customers via e-mail message that the baggage allowance for economy class passengers will be reduced on flights effective as of June 1, 2013, supposedly becoming the first commercial airline based in Asia to do so. The first piece of checked luggage for passengers assigned to seats in the economy class cabin will still be included free of charge. However, the second checked bag — currently also included free of charge — will now cost…

Alitalia Baggage Handlers Arrested for Theft — and How to Reduce the Risk For Your Luggage

There are many reasons why I loath to check baggage — and this article highlights one of those reasons. As the result of a probe over the past year investigating greater than 100 reports of luggage theft, police in Italy reportedly arrested 19 baggage handlers working for Alitalia at Aeroporto Internazionale Leonardo da Vinci di Fiumicino in Rome — and this video recorded by one of the hidden cameras supposedly catches some of the workers “red-handed”…

Interline Baggage Check to be Discontinued on Split Tickets by Alaska Airlines in January

Alaska Airlines is the latest airline to join the bandwagon of implementing a policy of no longer “through-checking” passengers’ baggage when they have been ticketed on separate tickets on separate airlines, effective as of January 15, 2013. In the meantime, some FlyerTalk members have resorted to…

Delta Air Lines is the latest airline to join the bandwagon of implementing a policy of no longer “through-checking” passengers’ baggage when they have been ticketed on separate tickets on separate airlines, effective as of January 15, 2013s. US Airways implemented a similar policy back in August, as reported here at The Gate. Some FlyerTalk members are angry, frustrated and upset about this policy. Although I do not defend the new policy in any way…

New Baggage Delivery Service by American Airlines: a Winner?

I am usually in favor of additional options for travelers without taking away current options, and it appears that the new VIP baggage delivery service option being implemented by American Airlines starting on Monday, August 6 is one of those options. For $29.95, you can bypass the baggage claim area at the airport after your flight has landed and have your baggage delivered to your final destination within one to four hours upon arrival, whether it is your home, office, hotel or any other delivery location within 40 miles of the arrival airport which you may choose. Two pieces of baggage will cost you $39.95, and…
